Martin McKenzie (left) got the better of Mario Allen (right) as the first Wray & Nephew Fight Night match got underway at Cling Cling Oval in Olympic Gardens recently.
The rain threatened from early with a light drizzle, which began just after 7:00 pm. Despite the rain, the amateur card got underway on time as scores of fans braved the conditions to watch the pugilists in action.
Martin McKenzie got the better of Mario Allen in the first fight of the night in a contest that went the full three rounds. The second fight, however, was over in the blink of an eye.
From the opening bell, Jevon Lundy was hit with a barrage of punches by Lesburn Harvey, sending him to the canvas mere seconds into the fight. While the referee was administering a standing eight count, a towel was thrown from Lundy’s corner signalling an end to the fight with less than one minute on the clock.
Gian-Carlo Dujon, son of legendary West Indies wicket keeper Jeffery Dujon, and Bruce Chin engaged in a keen contest over their three rounds with Dujon coming out ahead on the judges’ scorecards at the end of the fight. Both men gave almost as good as they got with the more experienced Dujon gaining the upper hand in the final round.
Gervan Garrison easily got the better of Ajani Williams in their Light Heavyweight contest, but the same could not be said of the fifth fight as Errol Pusey came out the winner by the slimmest of margins over Kashieve Nelson by split decision in their Welterweight contest.
Kevon McKenzie powered his way to the win over Miguel Bernard in their Welterweight contest before Kirk Patrick Heron closed out the amateur bouts with a win over Mark Cunningham.
The heavy rainfall worsened throughout the night causing many patrons to retreat to the large Wray & Nephew VIP tent which was perfectly placed with the boxing ring in full view. The grounds soon became flooded which led to the fighters being driven in cars to ringside.
The fight between Donovan “Police” Campbell and Kevin "Bus Boy” Hylton which was originally scheduled to be a pro-fight was declared an exhibition fight due to the conditions.
Robert Martinez from the Dominican Republic came out the victor in the first official pro fight of the night when he defeated Juezier “Iron Man” Heron.
The final fight of the night also included an international boxer as Jaden “Mad Slug” Eccleston of the Cayman Islands who was visibly upset at the ruling of the judges after the Cruiserweight fight was given to his opponent Jamaican Jermaine Bowen. Both men went toe to toe for most of the fight in what was one of the closest fights of the night.
The next staging of the Wray & Nephew Fight Nights is slated to return in eight weeks on November 29.
