Uncontrollable juveniles in correctional facilities to be relocated

In addressing this morning’s sitting of the Senate, Minister Samuda said “a correctional facility is simply not set up to deal with the nuanced issues facing juveniles deemed uncontrollable. In fact, our correctional officers are simply not trained to manage them and provide the necessary psychosocial support. They are trained to manage those on remand, or those convicted of criminal offenses”.

Free Covid testing for Old Harbour area this weekend

Based on a flyer being distributed, a team from the St Catherine Health Department will be at the front of the Marlie Mount community on February 14, 2021 between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Another team will be at the Davis Primary School in northern Old Harbour during the same period.

A brief history about Old Harbour Clock

Hence we wrote to the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT), the state’s gatekeeper of most if not all historical monuments or landmarks across the entire country.

In responding to our request for some literature about the Old Harbour Clock, the JNHT shared a little brief history which makes interesting reading.

According to this bit of info the Old Harbour Clock was the second monument of its kind to be erected in the parish of St Catherine, following that of the Spanish Town Clock which was built many, many years before.

STATEMENT: Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society says Dr McDonald's abortion comments ‘incoherent’

The Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society (JCHS) views with serious concern the recent statement, as reported in the Gleaner of Friday, February 5, 2021, by Dr. Garth McDonald, Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, expressing support of the legalisation of abortion.  How incoherent it is for the SMO of Jamaica’s main maternity hospital, an institution whose aim is to assist in bringing  innocent unborn children into the world, to promote legalisation of the unlawful killing of the same innocent unborn children.

Video footage tells telling tale of fatal fight

Last Thursday about 12:50pm Hoshane Hibbert, 30 years old, taxi driver of School Lane, Seaforth, St. Thomas died in hospital while undergoing treatment after he was stabbed by 39-year-old suspect Mario Downer, alias ‘Short Man’, a vendor of Retreat, Morant Bay, St. Thomas.

Preliminary reports are that both men were at Rum Store Plaza, Church Street, Morant Bay, in the vicinity Almond Tree Hide Out when an argument developed between them.

Gunmen kill ‘Piggy’ at Gutters

The deceased has been identified as Errol Anderson, a 50-year-old labourer popularly called ‘Piggy’  or sometimes 'Blacks' of an Alvin Drive, Gutters address.

According to the police about 9:46 pm Anderson was about to enter his yard when he was attacked by armed men who shot him three times in the chest and once in the head.

He died on the spot.

The police are yet to establish a motive for the killing at the moment.

Warmington outlines road maintenance programme

Speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (February 2), Mr. Warmington said maintenance work will be viewed as either preventative maintenance or corrective maintenance, which includes performance standards, routine maintenance, periodic maintenance, rehabilitation and emergency repairs.

“For performance standards, the most effective team size, equipment, methods and procedures for performing the work will be defined for each significant maintenance work item to be utilised,” he said.

Jamaican Canadian groups respond to travel ban

Reacting to a rise in Covid19 cases as well as the discovery of new variants of the virus in the country, the Justin Trudeau-led government imposed its strictest measures yet to curtail the spread.
On Friday Canada issued a complete ban on all flights to the Caribbean region and Mexico – popular tourist destinations for Canadians this time of the year – until end of April which comes only a few weeks after mandating all travellers to provide a negative Covid PCR test 72 hours prior to travelling to the country.

The Old Harbour Clock | Is this colonial relic still worth keeping?

Today, the clock is far removed from its majestic and pristine best, a colonial relic seemingly left to decay by the elements and time.  It no longer works these days, in fact for more than a quarter of a century, leaving many to ponder its relevance in an era where everyone can keep abreast of the time from a wide range of smart devices.

But has the time come to do away with the clock?

Driver’s licence renewal turn-around time reduced

The tax authority has taken steps to improve the turn-around time, from a maximum of eight weeks, depending on if the service was initiated at a processing or non-processing tax office. The new arrangement standardizes the process for greater convenience and improved customer satisfaction.

Taxpayers are being reminded that the payment for the renewal of a driver’s licence can be done online, on TAJ’s website at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm and the following documents submitted to any Tax Office to complete their transaction:
