Jamaica mark World Wetlands Day in Old Harbour Bay

World Wetlands Day is celebrated February 2 annually to raise awareness about the importance and real value of wetlands to human existence and the planet.

For example, 40% of all species on the planet live or breed in wetlands. Its distinct ecosystem plays many important roles, such as acting as a barrier between land and sea, as well as a sponge to remove pollutants.

The team spent most of the day counting the different species of birds in wetlands. This data is collated and submitted to the international body.

The historic traditional event takes place across many Jamaican towns and cities, signalling the official start to the festive season.

The decades-old ritual is one many citizens and businesses anticipate as streets are kept abuzz throughout the night and into the wee hours of the morning. But not this time around as many locals stay away or pack up early once the excitement dissipated.
