Construction resumes at Old Harbour, other critical health projects

Old Harbour Health Centre is now being prepared for the third and final phase of its roofing.
Despite the heavy rains and powerful winds that battered the island, officials reported that the four major health facility projects in the parish suffered only minimal disruption. A key factor, according to a project spokesperson, was the advanced stage of construction.
“All our active construction sites were beyond the foundation phase, and they were able to withstand the storm’s impact,” the spokesperson stated, highlighting the resilience of the structures.
In a precautionary move, all work was paused last week as the hurricane approached, allowing construction crews to prioritize their safety and secure their own homes and communities. Once the storm passed, a thorough assessment was conducted at each site, paving the way for a swift and safe return to work.
The project provided the following updated completion figures for the St. Catherine sites, confirming that progress remains on track for:
- Old Harbour Health Centre: 62% complete
- Greater Portmore Health Centre: 51% complete
- St. Jago Park Health Centre: 51% complete
- Spanish Town Hospital New Wing: 22% complete
The update also clarified that other planned projects, such as those in Ocho Rios, Brown’s Town, and the May Pen Hospital Outpatient Department Building, were unaffected as major physical works have not yet begun and teams are still being mobilized.
While celebrating the positive outcome for their projects, the HSSP expressed sympathy for those who suffered from the hurricane.
“Our hearts remain with everyone affected by this disaster,” the spokesperson said. “We are also deeply grateful for the commitment shown across all our teams as we continue to move forward together.”
