The incident occurred around 2:45 pm in the vicinity of the Sharper Lane overhead bridge. According to preliminary reports from the police, a 15-seater Toyota Hiace bus, heading towards Spanish Town with 14 persons on board, met with disaster when its right rear tyre blew out.
The catastrophic tyre failure caused the driver to lose control. The bus careened into the highway's railing, flipped multiple times, and finally came to a screeching halt on an embankment, leaving a trail of wreckage.
First responders, including police and courageous passersby, rushed to the grim scene. All occupants of the shattered vehicle were quickly transported to the Spanish Town Hospital. Tragedy was confirmed there, as five individuals were pronounced dead. A police officer on the scene informed Old Harbour News that "most of those injured”, including the driver, remain in serious condition and are receiving treatment.
At this time, the police are still trying to ascertain the identities of the deceased, confirming only that the fatalities comprise three males and two females.
The fatal crash sent ripples beyond the immediate tragedy, causing massive traffic disruptions during the evening rush hour. The eastbound leg of the toll road was reduced to a single lane for hours, leading to extensive delays as investigators worked at the scene.
The thoroughfare was finally cleared and deemed safe for the motoring public at approximately 6:00 pm, after authorities completed their on-site assessment and the wreckage was removed.
A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is now underway as a community is left to mourn the lives lost in this devastating event.
