This image shared by Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness shows the level of devastation in St Elizabeth in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.

Treacha Reid, president of the South St. Catherine Chamber of Commerce, has issued a clarion call to the local business community, urging a unified and compassionate response to the widespread destruction left by Hurricane Melissa across several western parishes.

The appeal was made following what Reid described as a deeply moving experience watching the news, which highlighted the severe impact on the parishes of Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, and Trelawny.

“The images and stories coming out... are truly heartbreaking,” Reid stated in a Whatsapp members group. “Many of our fellow Jamaicans have lost their lives, homes, livelihoods, and sense of normalcy overnight.”

While expressing gratitude that Old Harbour and its environs were “spared the worst of the storm’s impact,” Reid was quick to emphasize that with gratitude comes responsibility. She framed the current moment as a critical time for the business community to demonstrate solidarity and support.

“Now is the time for us, as a business community to stand together and extend a helping hand to our brothers and sisters in need,” she declared.

The chamber is mobilizing a collective relief effort and is calling on all its members, friends, and the wider Old Harbour community to contribute. The public is asked to donate essential items, including non-perishable food, clothing, toiletries, and building supplies such as plywood and doors. The chamber also emphasized that volunteers willing to donate their time are urgently needed.

Reid is encouraging a swift and organized mobilization, asking business leaders to reach out to their colleagues and associates to ensure a robust community-wide response.

“Let us discuss, organize, and mobilize,” she urged. “Together, we can bring hope, comfort, and support to those who are struggling to rebuild. Let’s be the light that shines in this dark time.”

Businesses and individuals interested in contributing to the South St. Catherine Chamber of Commerce’s hurricane relief effort are encouraged to contact the chamber directly for more information on drop-off points and volunteer opportunities.

In a subsequent update the influential business group, formerly the Old Harbour Chamber of Commerce, informed that in partnership with several southwest St Catherine civic groups, a team will be travelling to Westmoreland on Wednesday (November 5, 2025) to deliver essential aids to the stricken parish.

Persons willing to donate or volunteer can contact the chamber via email at sstcatherinechamber@gmail.com or call 876 430 2977.
