Residents endure weeks of low water pressure, NWC unaware

For over two weeks, thousands of residents served by the National Water Commission’s (NWC) Spring Village facility have been grappling with a severe and persistent disruption to their water supply, with the utility company allegedly in the dark about the issue.

The problem began on August 28, 2025, following a planned 11-hour power outage conducted by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS). Since power was restored, residents from Nightingale Grove to Spring Village itself have reported only a trickle of water flowing from their pipes, a situation that is causing growing frustration.

“I haven’t been able to use my shower since this disruption started two weeks ago,” lamented a frustrated resident of Nightingale Grove, who spoke with Old Harbour News. “It’s a major inconvenience for my family and we’ve heard nothing from the NWC about what’s happening or when it will be fixed.”

Another resident from Spring Village reported a complete dry spell two Sundays ago, after which service returned but still at very low pressure, making daily tasks like bathing, cooking, and cleaning exceedingly difficult.

Despite the widespread complaints from a region of over 5,000 people, an official response from the NWC has been conspicuously absent. Repeated attempts by Old Harbour News to get a comment from the commission have been met with silence.

However, a source within the NWC, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization, revealed that the company’s central office has not received any formal report of a problem at the Spring Village facility.

The source expressed shock at the duration of the problem, stating: “If it is confirmed officially that the facility has been operating substandard for such a prolonged period, it means someone on the ground has fallen asleep on the job.”

According to the insider, the issue is suspected to be an electrical fault, likely related to the JPS power outage. Such faults typically require specialized expertise from JPS technicians to rectify, pointing to a potential inter-utility complication that could delay a resolution.

With residents suffering in silence and official channels remaining mute, the community is left wondering when their vital water service will be restored to normal.

The Spring Village facility serves the communities of Spring Village, Spring Gardens, Nightingale Grove, Nightingale Grove Farms, Grove, Gutters, Island Farm, Bushy Park and Lloyds Pen.
