A swift community response, fueled by social media alerts, led to the safe recovery of a six-year-old girl yesterday evening, approximately four hours after she was reported missing from St. Thomas Moore Preparatory School.

According to the Clarendon Police, the incident began shortly after 2:30 p.m., when the child’s parent arrived for dismissal and discovered she was not on the school grounds. The police were immediately notified and activated their missing person response.

Images of the child were rapidly disseminated through school and community WhatsApp groups. This alert reached Councillor for the Hayes Division, Scean Barnswell, and his wife. Between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., the couple spotted the girl accompanied by an unknown man along Glenmuir Road near the Bustamante Highway.

Councillor Barnswell intervened, detaining the man until police arrived. The suspect was taken into custody. Police subsequently searched a premises at Savannah Cross connected to the individual.

The child, while appearing unharmed, was taken to the hospital for a medical examination as a standard precaution. The result of that medical report was not disclosed by the police.

In the wake of the incident, the school convened an emergency meeting with parents and initiated a review and strengthening of its security protocols. The police investigation is ongoing to determine how the child was removed from school premises, while formal charges are pending against the suspect in custody.

The case has sparked significant community concern regarding child safety and security. The child’s family is receiving support from authorities during this traumatic ordeal.
