The incident occurred during daybreak this morning in the community of Horizon Park, Spanish Town.
The identities of the officers have not been released. However, Old Harbour News can report that among the group's rank is a superintendent, a constable and a district constable.
Information is that the officers were patrolling the area when they came under heavy gunfire.
Confirming the incident, the police issued a brief statement via Twitter saying the "police are confirming that four of our members were ambushed and shot last night while on duty. Two have since succumbed. A superintendent and another member are currently in surgery”.

Arlene McBean of the police federation also confirmed the incident.
"Please note that a team from the St Catherine North Division came under gunfire by hoodlums located in the same area.
"Our colleagues were shot and injured during the process and were rushed to a medical facility by another colleague.
"Unfortunately it is now confirmed that two of our colleagues succumbed to their injuries, while the others are in critical condition," McBean wrote in a post to members.
A para-military team has since been deployed in the area, while crime scene detectives are busy searching for clues.
A JDF helicopter has been deployed in the area as well, residents confirmed.
