Jamaican-born US Staff Sergeant Earl Mowatt credits basketball for his success

“I learned independence from a very young age. For the most part my mom, she was always working. I had to make my own breakfast, take myself to school, ensured that my homework was done, ensured that I got home, ensured that my uniform was always clean,” recounted Mowatt in an interview with Old Harbour News.

Neville Myton remembered as a selfless, dedicated humanitarian

Neville Myton, who on Wednesday passed away at his Miami home in Florida after a gruelling race battling cancer at age 74, was that boy, alongside George Kerr, eliciting hope, pride, and joy in the hearts of Jamaicans.

A specialist middle-distance runner, Myton, who was 18 years old then, and Kerr, were the standard-bearers for the country at the 1964 Summer Olympics in the 800 metres. He was at it again four years later at the 1968 edition in Mexico City, this time in tandem with countryman Byron Dyce.

Jamaican UFC fighter Randy Brown delivers inspiring message

The 30-year-old US native, fighting under the Jamaican banner, performed a one-armed rear choke submission in the first round to record his 13th win from 17 fights. 

In that now famous post-fight interview of his most recent triumph, which was laced with the Jamaican vernacular, Brown quickly became a household name among Jamaicans all over the world.

In one of his latest interviews since that epic display in the Octagon, Brown delivered a few inspiring messages that is sure to expand his growing fan base.

Babe Ruth League, Inc appoints Jamaican John Isaacs

Isaacs, who has been in dialogue with the American non-profit sporting body for some time now, formally received his official letter in late April.

As Area Commissioner, he will be in charge of overseeing the growth of baseball locally for Cal Ripkin Baseball, Babe Ruth Baseball and Babe Ruth Softball.

Jamaica to play in US Soccer Summer Series

On June 10, the Reggae Girlz will tackle Nigeria and on June 13, they will play world champions and host, the United States of America. Both games will be played at the BBVA stadium in Houston, Texas. Portugal will also take part in the four-team event.

The games will be the first for Jamaica since they participated in Concacaf Olympic qualifiers in February 2020.

JFF issues cease and desist order prohibiting football

In a statement issued today, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) “categorically and publicly disassociates itself from any youth or adult football tournament which is being played in the island at this time”.

It is not sure what prompted this move by the JFF, as all football competitions under its auspices have been placed on hold since the first Covid-19 case was announced in March of 2020.

Joel Bailey reflects on senior national basketball debut

The 23-year-old point guard who is still in college in the United States was among a group a players quickly drafted by the Jamaica Basketball Association (JaBA) after it accepted an invitation at short notice to play in the competition.

Jamaica failed to advance to the next round of the qualifiers after finishing fourth in the five-team tournament. The intense and high-pressure competition was played in five days with Costa Rica, Nicaragua and the host country advancing ahead of the Jamaicans and Guyana.

Norwegian club Aalesunds FK pays tribute to Tremaine

Stewart, 33, died Sunday morning at the Spanish Town Hospital after collapsed during a game of football in his community of Gordon Pen.

The former Reggae Boy, who played 12 times for Jamaica, played for the Norwegian First Division side between 2012 and 2014, helping them to win 46 games while scoring 10 goals.

Jamaican footballer Tremaine Stewart dead

Stewart, 33, was playing football with his friends in the community of Gordon Pen, Spanish Town when he suddenly collapsed on the field. He was rushed to the hospital while doctors tried desperately to resuscitate him without any luck.

Stewart burst onto the local football scene playing for St Catherine club Fraziers Whip FC before moving up to the National Premier League, donning the shirts of Waterhouse FC, Portmore United and Harbour View.
