Jamaican sport pioneer Olympian Vilma Charlton to be honoured in New York

Team Jamaica is the New York-based organization that provides hospitality services to Caribbean athletes at the Penn Relays held annually at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The beautiful Spring affair will be held on Sunday April 24, 2022, 12 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Crest Hollow Country Club, 8325 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury, New York.

Other honourees are Stephen Drummond, Dawn Warren, David Warren, and JoAnne Squillace.

Ms Charlton is being honoured for her distinguished and transformational career and leadership in the field of sport and as an educator.

Old Harbour native and former Reggae Boy Omar Cummings lands coaching role

A 10-year sojourn in the premier football league in the US, has taken the boy born in Bodles, Old Harbour, to Colorado Rapids, Houston Dynamo, San Antonio Scorpions and FC Cincinnati, before hanging up his boots in 2017.

As a seasoned striker in the MLS, Cummings quick turn and speed was a weapon he used to good effect, especially at the Rapids and during his time representing the Reggae Boyz on 35 occasions, scoring seven times.

Jamaica’s sports medicine rehab programme to provide high-quality care to athletes

The Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with local and overseas partners to advance the programme.

Partners are the Montefiore University Hospital/Albert Einstein Medical School, a public organisation with headquarters in New York, United States of America (USA), and the Zion Care International, a non-profit organisation in New York, and a local office operating in Jamaica.

Wife of late Neville Myton reveals motivation to continue his legacy

Under the tutelage of his mentor the late Carl March, Myton quickly establish himself as the top-ranked middle distance runner in the country, despite being a teenager, setting respective national and world junior records in the 880 yards and 800 metres.

He was seen as the heir to the throne following the Herb McKinley era. Myton carried the hopes of a nation at the 1964 and ’68 Olympics in the 800 metres but failed to advance beyond the first round at both Games.

Organisers honour Neville Myton’s wish with donations to schools in Old Harbour Bay

The legacy of the late Neville Myton was surely on show last Friday in Old Harbour Bay, as three institutions of learning based in the community were given monetary grants courtesy of the Old Harbour Bay 5K Road Race organisers.

Myton, who was 74 years old when he died on May 19, 2021, is one of the founding members of the Old Harbour Bay 5K event, first staged in 1995. The popular event now has the distinction of being the longest running road race in Jamaica.

Desmond McKenzie slams Oral Tracey sabotage claim

“This is completely malicious, reckless and unfounded. The Government of Jamaica is facilitating the responsible return of sport and social life in general, in line with the COVID-19 indicators.

There is no policy to promote one sport while restricting the other,” McKenzie stated in a media release issued this evening.

10,000 ‘vax only’ fans to attend Gibson McCook Relays

“This decision was made at a meeting involving officials from the organizing committee of the Gibson McCook Relays, representatives of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association and of a number of ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management.

Windies legend appointed batting consultant

Chanderpaul, who had an outstanding international career, is the most capped player in West Indies Test history. He played 164 matches and made 11,867 runs at an average of 51.37. He is the newest member of the coaching staff, headed by Head Coach Floyd Reifer, and will be part of this preparation period, which runs from November 15 to 28 at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

Chris Gayle announces retirement wish

Gayle, 42, had a disappointing run at the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as the defending champions the West Indies were eliminated from the tournament at the Super 12 Stage.

"I'd love to play one more World Cup, but I don't think they will allow me," he said before bursting into that trademark laughter of his. 

Moments before the Caribbean side played Australia in their final Group A match, Bravo, 36, declared that this will be his last game in the maroon colours of the West Indies.

National badminton coach Lisco Jackson to be interred Oct. 14

Jackson, 53, died September 28 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

He's survived by two daughters.

The Dunrobin High School past student, climbed the ranks to become one of Jamaica's best badminton coaches, a sport he served for more than two decades.

The GC Foster adjunct lecturer was oftentimes selected as head coach of several national teams representing Jamaica at regional and international tournaments.
