Cricket scholarship reignites dream of Old Harbour’s Devoy Smith

Devoy Smith was a high school standout back in 2008 at Clarendon College where he scored three centuries in Headley Cup, the premier schoolboy cricket competition in rural Jamaica.

Smith, along with global T20 stars Andre Russell, who was his senior in high school and Rovman Powell, was among a batch of young and talented cricketers from Old Harbour with big dreams of playing the sport at the highest level.

Heads could roll at JADCO, as Grange orders probe into Jamaica’s world record run bungling

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, made the announcement during her contribution to the 2022/23 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday (June 8).

At the April Carifta Games at the National Stadium in Kingston, the talented young athletes – Serena Cole, Tina Clayton, Brianna Lyston and Tia Clayton – won the Under 20 4×100 metres relay in the world record-breaking time of 42.58 seconds.

National hockey debutant Jovanna Johnson of Old Harbour wants to make her family and country proud

The 20-year-old resident of Old Harbour Glades is still beaming with pride after representing Jamaica for the first time in what is still a budding hockey career.

Johnson was a member of the Jamaica women’s senior team that finished third in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games Women’s Hockey Qualifier in Hamilton, Bermuda. The tournament was held April 13-17 with host Bermuda topping the final points standing ahead of Puerto Rico, with Guyana finishing at the bottom. Weeks later after returning home Johnson is still elated about a dream now being realised.

Zone leaders in battle to remain on top in Old Harbour South football

This weekend will prove challenging for Midfield Madness, Red Ground, Scheme and others play back-to-back in rescheduled games previously postponed.

Old Harbour Baptist circuit launches charity 5K Run/Walk

Dubbed Run for the Fund, the event seeks to raise at least $250,000 to aid students across the Old Harbour area ahead of the next academic year beginning September.

The race will begin at the Old Harbour Baptist Church (opposite Old Harbour Primary School) and will see participants making their way to the Old Harbour Bay Baptist Church, situated along Main Street, Old Harbour Bay.

Race time is 6:30 am sharp.

Leon Bailey update after latest injury blow

The winger was substituted in the 40th minute in Villa’s match versus Norwich City.

Villa defeated the visitors 2-0 to relegate the Canaries to the Championship next season.

After the game Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said Bailey twisted his ankle and will likely miss their next game away to Burnley.

The popular community cricket event organised by state agency the Social Development Commission will only have 12 parishes being represented with Hanover and St James the exception.

A competition rule that only players who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 are eligible to take part is at the heart of the dramatic decline in registration.
