Curious onlookers quickly gathered at the scene about 1:00 pm today when a man, whose identity is being withheld, was arrested by the police.
It later emerged that the vehicle was reported stolen about 12:30 pm from Winston ‘Jah T’ Turner, a well-known businessman in Old Harbour. Turner was at his home at Smith Avenue when he was approached by two men who brandished guns and robbed him of $50,000 and his $1.7 million valued motor vehicle.
“Mr Turner was at his unfinished apartment doing some work when two men armed with guns approached him and demanded the keys to the vehicle under gunpoint. Mr Turner handed the key of his Grey Toyota Noah… they did a searched of his pocket and took a sum of $50,000 Jamaican Dollars that he had in his back pocket (and) made their escape in the vehicle,” the police said.
Acting on intelligence the police pursued a white Toyota Axio, which they believed to be an accessory in the robbery, but it managed to elude them.
However, in Sharper Lane, the police caught up with the lone man driving Turner’s vehicle.
He attempted to escape but was accosted by the police after two warning shots were fired into the air, residents told Old Harbour News.
The police say that the money stolen from Turner was not recovered, neither was any weapon found following a search.
Commanding officer in charge at the Old Harbour Police Station, DSP Damion Manderson, applauded the team of officers for their “swift and decisive actions and commend the members… which lead to the apprehension of one suspect involved in the robbery of a motor vehicle in Smith Avenue earlier today. Well done team”.
