An estimated 10,000 residents in south western St Catherine remain without water for the past 36 hours.

This is due to an "internal electrical" problem at the National Water Commission (NWC) Marlie Mount facility.

In an update this afternoon the utility company said emergency works are ongoing due to unforeseen "mechanical problems” developed while carrying out the repairs at the pumping unit.

This has severely impacted the very densely populated communities of Marlie Mount, Church Pen, Island Farm, Old Harbour Villa and some areas of Old Harbour.

"NWC has been working to restore operation, however, due to unexpected challenges with the repair works a further update will be given of restoration date," stated the company in an advisory.

It added that in the meantime water will be trucked to affected areas, but residents say they are yet to see any water truck in their communities at the time of publishing.
