Burke, 30, made the disclosure on his Instagram account having signed for the Union in 2016.
He wrote: “I would have liked to leave differently but I guess never a goodbye can be nice. I would have loved to continue here, I did everything with that goal and in the end it didn’t work. I only have words of gratitude for everyone all my teammates, coaches, everyone, who has joined me in so many years through my ups and downs, the tears we sheds (sic), the heartbreak, the celebrations at this club. And for our fans, who gave me all their love and I tried to give it back by giving everything for this shirt, this city, this state. I’m leaving but it’s not goodbye it’s just a see you later; because goodbye is the hardest thing to say. And finally I wish the @philaunion nothing but the best.”
The six-foot, four-inch forward appeared 93 times for the Union while scoring 25 goals.
Reports in the US suggest that Burke’s now former club wanted to extend his contract but both sides could not come to an agreement.
Meantime, it is understood that the New York Red Bulls are keen on securing the services of Burke and remains favourite to land the striker.
This year has arguably been Burke’s best season in the MLS, as he ended the campaign with seven goals and five assists from 33 games, majority coming off the bench.
The former Rivoli United player was among the scorers in the Eastern Conference final against New York City FC, before losing to Los Angeles FC in the MLS Cup final.
Nationally, Burke has been a mainstay in the Reggae Boyz squad since making his debut in 2016 against Haiti. He has made 27 appearances for his country, scoring seven goals in the process.
