Both men of North Street, Old Harbour, have been charged with the July 1, 2023 murder of 44-year-old labourer Kevin Davis of Bodles Crescent, Old Harbour.
Man killed in Old Harbour mob attack identified
In the afternoon on the day of his death, Davis, alias ‘Tubby’, was in the Burke Road community when he was set upon by a mob on the allegation of being a goat thief.
Smith, better known as ‘Al’ and Freeman, also called ‘Dada’, were allegedly the main protagonists who chased, beat and chopped Davis, a Jamaica Gleaner report on the bail hearing stated.
Lawyers representing the accused men raised concerns about the credibility of the eyewitness’ statement in the report submitted by the police, contending that their clients are innocent of the charges.
In arguing why their clients should be granted bail, the attorneys further contend that the accused men, whilst staunchly denying any involvement in the mob killing, have been cooperating with investigators and had turned themselves in within a moment’s notice of being named as persons of interest in the matter.
They were then offered bail at $500,000 each on condition that they report to the police station weekly up until their next scheduled court appearance on September 13, 2023.
