Metro Group of Companies and its subsidiary Metro Compactor Services Inc, last Friday at the company’s Toronto headquarters, donated CAD$10,000 to Beyond The Wall, a charity registered in Canada and founded by Jamaican native Tyrone Francis.
The presentation was received by a group of Jamaicans within the employ of Metro Compactor Services to demonstrate the company’s strong solidarity with their island nation.
Jamaica was ravaged by Hurricane Melissa on October 28, a massive Category-5 storm and most powerful to ever hit the island historically. Some 45 people died as a result of the storm and close to US$7 billion in estimated damages highlight the gravity of the recovery cost.
In the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, thousands of Jamaicans from all over the world, international aid organisations, charity groups, and numerous allies of the influential Caribbean nation, have been pouring aid into the country all in an effort to return normalcy in the hardest hit regions.
That the Metro Group has opted to show its support to Jamaica through Beyond The Wall, is a grateful feeling and indeed a blessing, Francis said.
“Words are not enough to express our deep level of support from Metro Group and Metro Compactor Services,” he tells Old Harbour News. “This donation will play a big part in our hurricane relief programme which has already started in Jamaica.”
“So far, we have been to the parish of St Ann donating care packages to victims and with this donation now we can do a lot more and expand our support to other communities in other parishes,” he added.
Founded in 1978, Metro Compactor Services Inc has become Canada’s leading expert in waste and recycling equipment by providing cutting-edge waste and recycling solutions. Danny Mauti, president and CEO of the Metro Group of Companies said it was “important to help” and described his Jamaican employees as “great people”.
Francis, a Kingstonian by birth, who spent one year at Jamaica College before immigrating to Canada, founded Beyond The Wall in 2018 with one specific goal in mind: “to help people find their way”. Today, through various philanthropic programmes design to eradicate poverty, the charitable group has committed its efforts to enable the less fortunate to access basic necessities of life year-round in Jamaica.
