SmartHomes by CEAC: Bringing innovation and affordable housing to St Catherine

This serene community is the place where the 260-year-old Bushy Park Aqueduct is surrounded by 21st Century ‘SmartHomes’, and where modern technology provides solutions to everyday household challenges.

Each SmartHomes, on lot sizes of about 3,700 sq. ft to about 5,000 sq. ft, is equipped with a solar electricity generating system, a solar water heater, a water-harvesting system, SMART light switches and electrical outlets, exterior floodlight cameras, plus an electric car charging outlet. Ottey, who is better known as ‘Nadine’, has not been her usual jovial self for days now as the uncertainty of the situation wreaks havoc on her mental state.

“Me nah cope too well. Yesterday me drop down and haffi go a doctor go get medication,” she tells Old Harbour News. “It rough pon me.”

Ottey , a resident of Narine Lane in the fishing community, recalls  the last time she saw her daughter on the Tuesday morning, she was wearing a white merino t-shirt, leopard skin shorts and a plastic push-toe slippers.

China-Caribbean economic summit to discuss ‘new opportunities’

According to Chinese state media Xinhua, the September 12-14 ministerial meeting in Hainan, China, will concentrate minds on emerging sectors such as the green economy and digital technologies. However, the forum will continue to explore fruitful cooperation in trade, investment, human resources and health care.

Lin Feng from the Chinese commerce ministry told a recent press conference that China is keen to assist Caribbean countries develop a better understanding of its trade policies.

Old Harbour's Bishop Neville Currie honoured

At a ceremony marking the occasion on the church grounds, appreciation for the deserving man of God came in the form of speeches, songs, and heartfelt testimonies that celebrated his profound impact.

Bishop Currie, 84, originated from Ulster Spring, Trelawny and is the fifth child of Felix and Sylvia Currie. The man of God created a family of his own as he has been blessed with his first daughter, Sheryl Currie-Clarke, his wife Esmay Morgan-Currie, and their three children: Althea, Aleitha and Osbourne Currie.

17% of Jamaica population will be senior citizens by 2025

That’s approximately 400,000 Jamaicans, with the numbers to rise even more in the next couple of decades. It’s a growing concern for the nation’s aging population and that of the world, contends says the health ministry’s CMO Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor-McKenzie

“The World Health Organization estimates that by 2030, 1.4 billion people will reach the age of 60 and over and by 2050, this figure will stand at 2.1 billion,” she said in an article published by state media JIS.

St Catherine Health Dept offers free prostate cancer screening

Caribbean Wellness Day, which will be celebrated under the theme ‘Power through Collective Action’ with a sub-theme ‘Good Health is Our Right’, is an annual event geared towards increasing awareness among CARICOM member states to fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Old Harbour Road crash victims identified

When contacted a police officer from the St Catherine North traffic department revealed the deceased men as 40-year-old Nicholas Creary, otherwise called ‘Nick’ of Federal Avenue, Sydenham and James ‘Limbo’ Morgan, said to be in his 30s, of a Gutters, Old Harbour address.

According to police information collated from the main eyewitness, about 9:20 pm Morgan and Creary were both travelling in a Nissan motor car heading towards Old Harbour.

Jamaica to entrench AI into school curriculums

The announcement was made by the Ministry’s Senior Director for Information and Communications Technology, Tyrone Anderson, while delivering the keynote address on behalf of Portfolio Minister, Hon. Fayval Williams, during the AI Web3 Pedagogy Seminar under the theme ‘EdTech Community ReImagined: Innovation in Education’.

The event was held at the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) in Kingston, on Thursday (September 12).

Mr. Anderson underscored the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining the core values of education while embracing technological advancements.

UN launches US$1.4 million hurricane relief cash programme in Jamaica

The Beryl Cash Assistance Programme targets 11,500 people whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Beryl in early July. The programme will provide USD$ 1.4 million (JMD$ 220 million) in relief and support to families in their recovery, ensuring access to food, water and other essential needs. Families with children, elderly people and persons with disabilities will be prioritized.

Credit union with office in Old Harbour nets J$330 million surplus

This was revealed during the financial institution’s 12th annual general meeting on September 9 in which over 200 of its members were in attendance.

“Our 2023 financial year closed with exceedingly positive results, of which we are proud as a collective entity. 

“The performance in 2023 is an improvement compared to the surplus of $184.25 million in 2022,” announced Quilston Harrison, acting chief executive officer (CEO) of FHC at the AGM.

“Additionally members, the company’s asset base grew to $18.98 billion, up from $17.19 billion in 2022.”
