Ground broken for Old Harbour’s newest housing development

Greathouse Estate is slated to be built on 86 acres of prime real estate by Brahma Construction (Brahmaco), an up and coming team of new kids on the block who are keen on delivering modern sophisticated homes to those at the upper level of the income ladder.

At a ceremony on site, Damion Tyrell, Brahmaco’s director and vice president of projects and operations, says the team is seeking to construct 410 units in five phases.

Unattended candle cause behind house fire

In an Old Harbour News follow-up with the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the investigation concluded that a lit candle was the cause of the blaze that partially destroyed a section of the four-bedroom dwelling on Mahoe Drive.

On July 6, 2024, three days after the passage of Hurricane Beryl which left most of the country without electricity and water, firefighters were called about 10:00 pm to the location by residents.

US software firm targets young women in Jamaica

This transformative effort aims to empower young women in Jamaica, between ages 17 to 23, to embark on rewarding careers in software development.

Applications are open now through October 25, 2024.

Selected participants will be announced in December and the programme will commence on February 1, 2025, running through November 2025. A similar programme targeting young men and women is planned for 2025.

ICC announces gender parity pay for World Cup events

The winners of the tournament, which will now be staged in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will receive US$2.34million, a massive, 134 per cent increase on the $1 million awarded to Australia when they clinched the title in South Africa in 2023.

The runners-up will receive $1.17 million, an increase of 134 per cent in comparison to the $500, 000 South Africa received for reaching the final on home soil at Newlands Cricket Ground.

Gangsters fatally shot in Rivoli

Twenty-nine years old Marco Miller and Alex Philpot, died during a police confrontation which occurred about 9:00 am.

Two illegal firearms – a .38 Smith and Wesson containing two live rounds and four spent casing and a shotgun – were recovered in the process.

Both men, the police say, are members of the Bed Bug gang, an offshoot of the notorious Clansman gang, and are known repeat offenders.

The main function of the Task Force, which was established last year, is to conduct AI research and provide an evidence-based foundation for the development of a National AI Policy.

Senator Morris Dixon indicated that she received a copy of the report last week, adding that “I have gone through [it] and we will be taking it to Cabinet”.

Holness promises long-term road investment

“It is going to be a 20-year journey for us to get all our roads into the conditions where we can drive in comfort on all of them. Going forward, the Government is making the commitment, with the budgetary allocations from our [positive] economic performance, to build new roads, improve those roads and maintain them. For the first time, we are in a position that we can project to be able to do this,” he disclosed.
