Hi-Pro, Project STAR boost poultry farming in May Pen community

50 years later, Spanish Town native makes $10m donation

The presentation was made during the agency’s 2024 Educational Achievement Awards ceremony held at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in Kingston on Thursday (January 30).

Dr. Smith, who delivered the keynote address, grew up in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, and faced homelessness when her parents migrated, leaving her without support.

She entered State care after her financially challenged grandaunt could no longer care for her.

That was over 50 years ago.

Today, Dr. Smith is the Chief Executive Officer of Sweet P Home Care, Inc. in the United States (US).

Female motorcyclist in stable condition after Old Harbour crash

Contrary to circulating rumors, multiple sources have confirmed that the young woman, a native of Spring Village, survived the incident and did not succumb to her injuries.

According to the Old Harbour Police Traffic Unit, the accident occurred between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Reports indicate that while traveling toward Old Harbour, the motorcyclist attempted to maneuver around a car that had signaled to stop. In the process, she was struck by an oncoming cement truck.

Lamar Myers charged with murder of Old Harbour pastor

The 27-year-old construction worker, a resident of the 'Africa' enclave in Burke Road, Old Harbour, was charged on Friday following a question-and-answer session conducted in the presence of his attorney. Myers now faces multiple charges, including four counts of murder, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of ammunition, and using a prohibited weapon to commit a felony.

SOE ends, but 48-hour curfew imposed in Old Harbour

However, while the SOE is being lifted, a 48-hour curfew has been imposed in southwest St Catherine, effective until February 6. The curfew will be in place from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM on both days, ASP Rankin confirmed.

For the past three weeks, St Catherine South has been under heightened security measures following a surge in major crimes, particularly murders. These measures have yielded positive results, with recent data showing a decline in homicides compared to the same period last year.

Works start on new $250m Spring Village bridge

Physical works for the bridge replacement project started this week and is scheduled for completion by year-end.

The bridge was closed in 2023 after it was discovered that the more than a century-old structure was severely compromised.
